Fibre Reinforcements

Reinforcement is, in addition to the matrix, the other of the two materials that are needed for building glass reinforced plastics. The reinforcement is bound to a solid material with the matrix. There are several different types of fibres that can be used to reinforce the composites. Naturally, the reinforcement chosen is determined by the end application. The most common fibre reinforcements are carbon fibre, aramid fibre and fibreglass. However, at least in the Finnish market, the most used reinforcement material in the FRP industry is fibreglass. Nowadays, the most used fibreglass is E-glass (electrical glass), which resists attacks from water efficiently and has excellent mechanical properties.
